EDITOR - MATTHEW DOUGALL
Matthew trained at The Oxford School of Drama and at Oldham College, training as a Musical Theatre actor: and in his younger and more lithe days toured extensively with productions ranging from ‘Cabaret’ (playing ‘Emcee’) (National Tour), to playing the title role in Huckleberry Finn. (Vienna's English Theatre).
His first production as director was for an amateur production of "Sweeney Todd" in 1989!!, and since then has directed many professional productions both here in the UK and throughout Europe.
Between 1990 and 1993 he adjudicated for the RTA / TMA Regional Theatre Awards scheme, and was a regular contributor to "Schauspiel und Buehnenkunst".
For the next 7 years Matthew worked exclusively as an actor and singer. Toured the USA twice as a soloist with The Black Mountain Male Chorus of Wales. acted for TIE Touring Theatres in Germany, Austria and Italy, and toured in several plays throughout the UK, including "Brigadoon" (playing Harry Ritchie), "A Man For All Seasons" (Richard Rich), "Assassins" (The Balladeer) and "King Lear" (Edgar).
For nine years between 2000 and 2010 he lived and worked in Austria with his own company (A13) producing and directing workshops and theatre productions in schools, colleges, universities and small scale rep companies as part of a national initiative for kinesthetic language learning and creativity. However, due to the world financial crisis he was forced to pack up and come back to the UK in 2010.
He was for a time the voice and movement coach for Mainstream Theatre Arts School in Denton, and Resident Artistic Director for The Space in Walkden., a Drama Tutor at Oldham College and was Assistant Director on two Oldham Coliseum productions, "Argy Bargy" and "Old(Ham)Let".
Directing credits whilst in Austria include, "Shakespeare In Love", "Jay MesBond and the Girls", "Our Country's Good", "Eastside Story" and "Journey to the River Sea" as well as many Musicals. Back in the UK, more recent directing credits include, "The Rivals" (Reading), "Kabuki Gift" (Oban), "Boy On A Bed", (Lowry, Salford), "Burglars" and "Zed's Corridor" (both in Manchester), and 'Game Of Souls' (NW tour). With numerous directing credits in Europe over the last few years including, "Oben Ohne" (a collaboration with renowned Kabarettist Christian Jabornig); "The Merry Wives Of Windsor" (Kiev and Moscow), "The Lion King" (Spain), "Chocolate in a Coffee Cup" (Poland), and "Burglars" (Finland); and last year directed two plays for an Irish TIE company over Skype!
Recent acting credits include playing Jesus in a modern Hip-Hop / Grunge music video; Stubbins in Cul-De-Sac's touring production of 'Telling Lives', and creating the role of Jacques in French film, 'Noir Et Blanc'.
Matthew is also a teacher of both English as a second language (ESOL), and of theatre / drama techniques and gives regular masterclasses and workshops on varying aspects of theatre acting both here and abroad. Further he is an accomplished singer (former Member of The Halle Choir), Musical composer (his full length musical, "The Haunted Mountain" was given a script-in-hand performance a Buxton Opera House), and a published playwright and poet.
The last couple of years however hs seen him take a back seat from being a driving force in creating theatre, and has turned to reviewing. He has reviewed extensively and zealously all forms of theatre and music since 2014, and written for several larger and more well-known online websites before deciding to 'go it alone'.
